About the Role
This role focuses on revenue cycle operations including billing, collections, and payment processing. It also involves performing patient access duties such as collecting demographic and financial information, scheduling services, and handling referrals. This is an entry-level, hands-on support role requiring routine work under supervision.
Responsibilities
- Interview inpatients and outpatients to obtain accurate patient registration data.
- Collect and document demographic and financial information for scheduled visits.
- Complete pre-service collection of patient liability, including deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments.
- Verify patient insurance and confirm benefits eligibility.
- Perform pre-authorization, pre-certification, and/or notification as required by third-party providers.
- Conduct pre-registration tasks for inpatients and outpatients.
- Obtain consent for treatments and necessary authorizations.
- Explain signature requirements to patients and representatives.
- Verify insurance coverage validity using eligibility tools.
- Ensure appropriate plan codes are added based on eligibility responses.
- Educate on different insurance plans and coordination of benefits.
- Identify concerns with coverage after checking insurance eligibility.
- Collect information for auto and worker’s compensation registrations.
- Notify patients of financial liabilities.
- Take an active role in collecting patient payments.
- Understand and communicate all collection policies and procedures.
- Post collected payments in the system of record.
- Provide Financial Counselor contact information to patients qualifying for financial assistance.
- Document patient’s financial state and related information in the system of record.
- Obtain authorization, pre-certification, referral, and/or notification as necessary.
- Attach verification to patient’s account and document information in the system of record.
- Provide excellent customer service and professional courtesy to all patients.
- Interact with physicians, nursing units, and office staff professionally.
- Maintain hospital financial information confidentiality in accordance with policies and regulations.
- Meet area-specific benchmarks for productivity and customer service.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) year of experience in a customer service setting, hospital registration, medical office, or insurance is preferred.
- Frequent sitting, standing and walking while working, and lifting 10-15 pounds.
- Ability to reach supply shelves and printers/copiers.
- Manual dexterity for computer keyboard operation.
- Ability to see computer screen and read reports.
- Ability to hear communications from coworkers, physicians, and clinical staff.
- Computer literacy including familiarity with word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and email applications.
- Ability to learn new applications, including the Organization’s Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Ability to perform accurate data entry.
- Strong customer service skills including excellent interpersonal and telephone skills.
- High degree of tact necessary due to frequent interaction with patients, physicians, and insurance companies.
- Experience using computer-based, patient registration systems.
- Thorough understanding of private insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid programs.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize work and be flexible with work assignments.
