About the Role
Professor Rachel Austin is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join the Bioinorganic Chemistry Laboratory at Barnard College. This grant-funded position involves designing and executing experiments for protein expression, purification, characterization, and reactivity testing, with potential supervision of undergraduate students. The role is for one year with the possibility of renewal.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement methods to maximize the expression and activity of integral membrane metalloenzymes and associated proteins.
- Carry out activity assays using a GC-MS.
- Measure metal concentration using an ICP-MS.
- Characterize proteins using a range of spectroscopic techniques.
- Synthesize organic substrates as needed.
- Shephard a new research direction into the role of the metalloenzyme AlkB in catalyzing the oxidation of long-chain alkanes.
- Design and carry out experiments to express and purify proteins, characterize them, and test their reactivity with a variety of substrates, some of which may need to be synthesized.
- Supervise undergraduate research students.
Requirements
- PhD in Chemistry or Biochemistry
- Experience with organic synthesis
- Excellent data and materials management and note-booking skills
- Creative problem-solving abilities with a focus on achieving goals
- Ability to work independently while functioning as part of a team
