About the Role

The Family Peer Specialist serves as a liaison for families interacting with the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS). Utilizing lived experience with the child welfare system, this role provides peer support, mentorship, and advocacy to empower families, amplify constituent voices, and bridge communication gaps between families and agency programs.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to inquiries via 311, website, walk-ins, and the OOA Helpline
  • Provide emergency crisis assistance to youth and families on a walk-in basis
  • Support parents, caregivers, and youth during conferences to ensure their perspectives are heard
  • Provide peer-to-peer support, mentorship, and advocacy to help families navigate ACS processes
  • Act as a liaison between families and ACS divisions to foster communication and conflict resolution
  • Document constituent contact in internal recordkeeping systems
  • Connect families to community-based resources including housing, education, mental health, and employment
  • Participate in outreach, presentations, and training to elevate family voice in policy and practice
  • Collaborate with the OOA team on office coverage and program initiatives
  • Engage in supervision, peer development, and professional training

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience, with at least one year of community work experience
  • Lived experience with direct involvement in the child welfare system
  • Must comply with Section 424-A of the New York Social Services Law regarding child abuse and maltreatment report inquiries
