About the Role

The CCRB's civilian investigators are essential to the agency's mission, leading daily functions and conducting impartial investigations of civilian complaints against NYPD officers for misconduct. This entry-level role requires strong writing and analytical skills to collect, review, and analyze evidence, interview relevant parties, conduct legal research, and draft comprehensive reports detailing investigation findings.

Responsibilities

Receive, manage, and impartially investigate civilian complaints alleging excessive force, abuse of authority, discourtesy, offensive language, or false official statements by NYPD officers.
Determine if complaints fall within the CCRB's jurisdiction.
Schedule and conduct interviews of complainants, witnesses, and officers.
Identify, secure, and analyze evidence, including police reports, body-worn camera footage, and medical records.
Analyze and interpret rules, regulations, and policies from the NYPD Patrol Guide.
Draft detailed transcriptions/summaries of all interviews.
Draft closing reports that concisely describe factual findings, applicable rules, and reasoning for recommended case dispositions.
Participate in field-investigation activities to identify and gather evidence.

Requirements

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.

About the Company

The Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) is the largest police oversight agency in the United States, responsible for investigating, mediating, and prosecuting complaints filed by the public against New York City police officers.
The agency investigates approximately 4,500 complaints each year, covering allegations of excessive force, abuse of authority, discourtesy, offensive language, untruthful statements, racial profiling, and biased policing.
The Investigations Division includes General Investigations Squads, Racial Profiling and Bias-Based Policing Squads, a Case Closing Squad, a Special Operations Unit, and a Training Unit.
