About the Role
This position performs technical inspections of plumbing, gas, and fire suppression systems to ensure compliance with NYC Construction Codes, Department rules, and approved plans. The role involves investigating incidents, issuing violations, and testifying as needed, contributing to the safe and lawful use of buildings in New York City.
Responsibilities
- Performs technical inspections of plumbing, gas, and fire suppression systems for compliance with codes, rules, and approved plans.
- Responds to, reports, and investigates accidents, incidents, and complaints.
- Performs inspections to assess the condition and status of gas piping systems.
- Witnesses tests on various systems for code violations or illegal practices.
- Studies drawings and other information to obtain details for inspections.
- Issues violations, summonses, and stop work orders.
- Verifies licenses of onsite workers.
- Advises recipients of the nature of violating conditions when issuing violations.
- Testifies as needed in various legal settings.
- Maintains records and makes reports.
- Explains and enforces laws and rules relevant to the field.
- May assign, supervise, review, and evaluate work of subordinates.
- May train subordinates in their duties.
- May review applications relevant to the field.
- May assist supervisor.
- May operate a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties.
Requirements
- Two years of full-time satisfactory experience as a plumber, inspector of plumbing systems, or superintendent of plumbers.
- One year of full-time experience as described above, plus one year of formal training or education in plumbing.
- Sixty credits towards a degree in civil engineering, engineering technology, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field.
- Completion of a minimum two-year apprentice program in plumbing or plumbing inspection.
- A license as a professional engineer or registered architect.
- Education and/or experience equivalent to the above requirements.
- For Assignment Level II, at least three additional years of experience as a plumber or inspector (for non-licensed P.E.s/architects).
- For Assignment Level III, at least one additional year of experience after meeting Assignment Level II requirements.
- For Assignment Level IV, at least one year of supervisory experience after meeting Assignment Level III requirements.
- Must successfully pass a drug screening.
- Must possess a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York and maintain it for the duration of employment.
- Candidates residing in New York City must apply to receive Special Patrolman status at the time of appointment.
