About the Role

This role strengthens leadership within the Project Engineering function by balancing team management with hands-on project engineering. The successful candidate will lead a team of five engineers while managing a portfolio of utility-scale solar PV and BESS projects across the full lifecycle, from development to construction and energisation.

Responsibilities

  • Line manage approximately five Project Engineers, including objective setting, performance reviews, and professional development.
  • Conduct regular 1:1s, provide coaching, and support team technical growth.
  • Manage workload allocation and resource planning across the team.
  • Act as the first point of escalation for technical queries and project issues.
  • Establish and maintain standard templates, checklists, and review processes to ensure quality.
  • Support recruitment and onboarding of new team members.
  • Report to the Head of Engineering on team capacity, project status, and risks.
  • Identify training needs and coordinate knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Foster collaboration across development, commercial, grid, and construction teams.
  • Engage with development teams on feasibility assessments and site selection.
  • Conduct constructability reviews and identify value engineering opportunities.
  • Review planning application documents, including layout drawings and EIA reports.
  • Support grid connection applications and maintain concept design drawings.
  • Ensure technical solutions meet EPC and EBOP/ICP contract requirements.
  • Facilitate input from specialist technical consultants and advisors.
  • Prepare tender documentation for front-end engineering services.
  • Assist in contractual negotiations with EPCs regarding technical specifications.
  • Engage with external consultants, contractors, lenders, and government agencies.
  • Provide input into Employer’s Requirements for EPC and consultant contracts.
  • Maintain engineering project information in internal reporting systems.
  • Produce technical reports for project management and senior leadership.
  • Inspect project sites and represent engineering interests in external meetings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in utility-scale solar PV and/or BESS projects.
  • Experience across project development, design, and construction phases.
  • Prior experience managing or leading a team of engineers.
  • Strong knowledge of PV technology, grid connections, and energy yield assessments.
  • Understanding of MV/HV grid connection procedures and PV plant installation.
  • Experience with solar project procurement, construction, and commissioning.
  • Knowledge of relevant Irish and UK design codes, regulations, and policy.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation in Ireland and the UK.
  • Proficiency in translating engineering issues into CAPEX and OPEX assumptions.
  • High analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
