About the Role

This role serves as deputy to the news editor within the racing content team, focusing on creating a digital-first, audience-led news service for Racing Post platforms. The position involves managing a team of reporters, commissioning agenda-setting news, and driving innovative digital formats to deliver industry-leading coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Act as duty news editor to manage the reporting team and deliver high-quality content
  • Foster a creative environment that inspires reporters to produce distinctive and impactful stories
  • Evolve and execute the digital-first news strategy using live blogs, explainers, and data-led journalism
  • Collaborate with audience, social, video, and graphics teams to maximize content reach and impact
  • Utilize audience data and editorial judgment to assess performance and improve commissioning
  • Ensure rapid coverage of breaking stories with follow-up analysis and premium depth
  • Line manage reporting team members, provide feedback, and raise standards of excellence
  • Represent the news desk at editorial conferences and contribute to content planning
  • Support the planning of news coverage and special projects

Requirements

  • Experience commissioning and editing news in a fast-paced digital newsroom
  • Excellent news judgment and ability to make rapid editorial decisions under pressure
  • Strong understanding of digital publishing, audience behavior, and engagement formats
  • Ability to provide clear, constructive feedback to a reporting team
  • Proficiency in using audience data and analytics to inform editorial decisions
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders
  • Knowledge of media law, editorial compliance, and journalistic ethics
  • Strong interest in horseracing and working knowledge of the betting industry
  • Experience managing, coaching, or developing journalists is desirable
