About the Role
Selective Insurance is seeking a Trial/Sr. Attorney to provide legal representation to insureds in the defense of litigated claims. This role involves managing a caseload from inception to resolution, providing legal advice to the claims department, and representing the company in litigated matters while ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Independently represent the Insured before the assigned Court and present witnesses and evidence.
- Analyze complex legal and factual issues and conduct extensive legal research.
- Develop and present initial defense strategies on behalf of the Insured.
- Draft pleadings, written discovery, motions, and briefs.
- Prepare for, attend, and handle all activities related to full trials and appeals.
- Provide effective and timely communications, legal advice, and services to clients and claims professionals.
- Assist in developing training materials for the Claims Department.
- Communicate with the Court, witnesses, opposing counsel, and clients according to the Code of Professional Conduct.
- Manage the prompt, efficient, and effective disposition of assigned cases.
- Travel to depositions, court appearances, and client meetings (approximately 20% of time).
- Maintain professional expertise through continuing legal education and monitoring market trends.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school.
- Member in good standing of the Bar of the jurisdiction.
- Knowledge of State laws, local court policies, and procedures.
- Valid state-issued driver’s license in good standing.
- Ability to demonstrate independent judgment, research, litigation, and analytical skills.
