About the Role

Selective Insurance is seeking a Trial/Sr. Attorney to provide legal representation to insureds in the defense of litigated claims. This role involves managing a caseload from inception to resolution, providing legal advice to the claims department, and representing the company in litigated matters while ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Independently represent the Insured before the assigned Court and present witnesses and evidence.
  • Analyze complex legal and factual issues and conduct extensive legal research.
  • Develop and present initial defense strategies on behalf of the Insured.
  • Draft pleadings, written discovery, motions, and briefs.
  • Prepare for, attend, and handle all activities related to full trials and appeals.
  • Provide effective and timely communications, legal advice, and services to clients and claims professionals.
  • Assist in developing training materials for the Claims Department.
  • Communicate with the Court, witnesses, opposing counsel, and clients according to the Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Manage the prompt, efficient, and effective disposition of assigned cases.
  • Travel to depositions, court appearances, and client meetings (approximately 20% of time).
  • Maintain professional expertise through continuing legal education and monitoring market trends.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Member in good standing of the Bar of the jurisdiction.
  • Knowledge of State laws, local court policies, and procedures.
  • Valid state-issued driver’s license in good standing.
  • Ability to demonstrate independent judgment, research, litigation, and analytical skills.
