About the Role
The Nurse Manager is a Registered Professional Nurse responsible for ensuring compliance to standards of care and practice by supervising personnel. This role involves planning and evaluating patient care for the assigned unit, managing operational aspects including budget preparation and resource monitoring, attending management meetings, and participating in department committees.
Responsibilities
- Practices regular hand hygiene and complies with standard and transmission based precautions as applicable.
- Responds appropriately to the special needs of each patient group served, considering age, language, gender, culture, religion/spirituality, economic background, education or literacy, developmental or cognitive disabilities, and physical and developmental disabilities.
- Aids in the orientation and mentoring of new employees.
- Plans, projects, and monitors staffing needs based on unit census, policies, and other variables.
- Responsible for hiring new employees and facilitating peer interviews in the selection process.
- Accountable for annual performance evaluations and competency reviews for all staff based on clinical practice standards.
- Coaches and counsels employees in accordance with established practices.
- Ensures a safe, clean, and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors by monitoring the environment, equipment, and supplies.
- Prepares the fiscal plan (personnel and capital) for the patient care unit, monitors productivity reports and monthly statements, and explains variances.
- Serves as a resource person to nursing personnel, physicians, and other departments.
- Promotes safe nursing practice.
- Intervenes with family and other health care providers when appropriate.
- Supervises and checks the work of staff.
- Provides leadership and direction in accordance with department goals and policies.
- Supports administrative decisions and changes within the department.
- Maintains professional competency and seeks opportunities for self-growth.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory standards for the department.
Requirements
- Current New York State RN License required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Strong leadership, time management, and verbal and written communication skills required.
- Strong computer skills (MS Office) required.
