About the Role
Monzo is seeking a proactive, enthusiastic, and commercially-minded accountant to join their Financial Control Team. This role is crucial for supporting business expansion, ensuring accurate financial data, and optimizing financial control processes with technology. You will play a key role in building a world-class finance function and scaling Monzo in a controlled manner.
Responsibilities
- Manage a tight process with the internal Finance team to ensure a swift month-end close process, including ownership of leases, managing accruals schedules, and group consolidation.
- Support junior team members and review their work.
- Understand the business and products to write insightful management commentary.
- Work with engineers and data teams to automate production elements of the role.
- Understand accounting systems and ensure all features are utilized to minimize manual reporting.
- Learn SQL skills to run reports and propose efficient and scalable process solutions.
- Maintain existing and develop new controls to protect financial data and the balance sheet substantiation process.
- Support the year-end process by working with external auditors and the Financial Reporting squad.
- Review new products, assess accounting implications, and implement them in the banking platform and accounting system.
- Work with the business to assess the impact of changes in accounting standards and propose accounting policy matters for new products.
- Help maintain the integrity of the chart of accounts and financial static data.
- Resolve miscellaneous inquiries and support the overall finance team, including forecasting, valuations, bank transfers, transfer pricing, and tax policy research.
Requirements
- Qualified accountant with 1-2 years of post-qualification experience.
- Experience in financial reporting/controlling teams.
- Experience in a retail banking environment is ideal.
- Great eye for detail.
- Fascination with the banking and regulatory landscape.
- Good understanding of key financial controls.
- Self-starter, comfortable tackling tasks independently.
- Ability to translate complex information into simple terms.
- Interest in using data.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic and constantly evolving environment.
