About the Role
Zencargo is seeking a Forward-Deployed Engineer to bridge engineering, product, and operations. This role focuses on rapidly solving operational and customer issues by understanding freight processes, identifying areas for software and AI intervention, and building solutions that deliver measurable results. You will have broad ownership, from problem discovery and solution design to building, shipping, and learning from the outcomes. The role involves hands-on work, strong product sense, and collaboration with senior stakeholders, supported by Data and Infrastructure teams. You will also contribute to scalable platform capabilities by productizing reusable components.
Responsibilities
- Embed with operations teams and internal stakeholders for several months to understand complex freight and supply-chain workflows.
- Translate loosely defined business problems into clear technical solutions, determining when to extend existing functionality and when to build new.
- Automate manual, spreadsheet, and inbox-based decisions by developing platform logic, with increasing AI involvement over time.
- Build and deploy prototypes, automations, and production-ready features, integrating with internal Zencargo services, carrier platforms, and third-party APIs.
- Utilize AI and modern development tools for accelerated delivery and as core components of solutions.
- Work with structured and unstructured data, including emails, documents, purchase orders, shipment data, and operational events.
- Test and measure solutions against real workflows and user feedback to improve manual effort, accuracy, processing speed, and business operations.
- Identify patterns across problems and convert them into reusable platform functionality.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and core Engineering, as well as Data and Infrastructure teams, while maintaining delivery ownership.
- Clearly communicate technical decisions, limitations, and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including executives.
- Maintain appropriate standards for security, reliability, data protection, and maintainability, and support solutions through implementation and early adoption.
- Deliver outcomes such as reduced time and manual effort in operational workflows, improved speed, accuracy, cost, or service quality.
- Achieve faster movement from problem identification to working production solutions.
- Drive adoption and effective use of delivered solutions.
- Ensure reliability, security, and maintainability of deployed solutions.
- Convert repeated problems into reusable platform capabilities.
Requirements
- Strong professional software engineering experience across the full lifecycle, from discovery to independent building, deployment, and production operation.
- Experience building and consuming APIs, webhooks, and system integrations.
- Experience working with databases, data models, and event-driven workflows.
- Fluent use of AI-assisted development tools as a core part of the building process.
- Strong product judgment, including quickly understanding unfamiliar business processes, distilling key information, and separating user requests from underlying problems.
- Comfortable working with ambiguity and making decisions without perfect requirements, with a bias toward action, experimentation, and iterative delivery.
- Confidence working directly with operational users and senior stakeholders.
- Ability to collaborate across Product, Design, Engineering, Data, and Infrastructure teams.
- Skill in explaining technical concepts in clear, practical language.
- Strong ownership, including responsibility for solution outcomes beyond just code delivery.
- Good understanding of software quality, observability, testing, security, and maintainable architecture.
- Experience in freight, logistics, or supply chain, or in another B2B SaaS or operational technology environment.
- Experience building workflow automation or orchestration.
- Experience with large language model applications and unstructured-data problems.
- Experience integrating with ERP, transport-management, warehouse-management, or internal operational systems.
- Experience in a solutions engineering, implementation, internal-tools, or forward-deployed role.
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, Terraform, CI/CD, and production support, ideally in an early-stage or high-growth environment.
