About the Role
The California Appellate Project (CAP) offers law students a meaningful opportunity to engage in appellate advocacy and public interest law. Volunteers and externs work under the guidance of experienced counsel to support capital defense efforts and ensure constitutional legal representation for individuals facing the death penalty.
Responsibilities
- Assist appointed counsel on post-conviction death penalty cases in habeas corpus and appellate proceedings
- Provide case assistance to unrepresented individuals on death row
- Track judicial and legislative developments affecting death penalty litigation
- Conduct death penalty defense training seminars for professionals and students
- Publish newsletters, manuals, and legal resources for the capital defense community
- Perform mitigation investigation and records collection
- Conduct case review under ameliorative statutes
- Perform legal research and writing
- Provide technical assistance to counsel in automatic appeals and habeas corpus matters
