About the Role

The Optometrist - Temporary role will perform routine vision and medical examinations using independent professional judgment within the scope of California law and MNHC policies. This position reports to the Chief Medical Officer.

Responsibilities

  • Examines eyes using observation and instruments to determine visual acuity, perception, focus, and coordination, and to diagnose ocular diseases and abnormalities.
  • Conducts and documents patient history, measures refractive error, and performs visual fields, pupil testing, ocular mobility testing, slit lamp examination, ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy, and tear function testing.
  • Prescribes eyeglasses and other necessary treatments.
  • Interprets clinical exam data, analyzes test results, and develops treatment plans.
  • Completes school forms, Department of Motor Vehicle documents, and similar paperwork.
  • Educates patients regarding examinations and findings.
  • Practices within the scope of optometry and refers to ophthalmology as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited school of optometry with a Doctor of Optometry degree.
  • Valid California Optometry license.
  • Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents Certification (T.P.A.).
  • Must have a National Provider Identifier (NPI) or obtain one prior to employment.
  • Cultural competency working with diverse/low-income communities, especially Spanish-speaking immigrant communities.
  • Knowledge of modern optometric methods, procedures, and practices.
  • Ability to perform eye examinations on children and adults.
  • Ability to write concisely and legibly.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to relate congenially to patients and staff.
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality when dealing with patient records and personal information.
