About the Role

Academic advisors assist students in developing educational plans to achieve their academic and career goals. They focus on academic progress, graduation, and provide guidance through knowledge of the curriculum, university requirements, and collaboration with faculty. Advisors connect students with essential support offices to help them navigate challenges and succeed.

Responsibilities

  • Advise students on class selection, academic policies, major requirements, and campus resources.
  • Assist students in identifying and achieving long-term academic and personal goals.
  • Utilize Starfish for scheduling, note-taking, managing flags, and follow-up on referrals.
  • Participate in Student Support Committee meetings to identify students needing academic advising.
  • Provide interim follow-up for students requiring support, checking progress with students and instructors.
  • Collaborate with departments like Student Success and Counseling Center to connect students with resources.
  • Use DegreeWorks in collaboration with students, faculty, and the Registrar’s Office.
  • Guide students in decision-making by understanding academic policies and procedures.
  • Assist FTOCs in university transition by collaborating on the first-year student success course.
  • Follow up with the Enrolled Not Registered List.
  • Perform junior and senior checks.
  • Assist students with Leave of Absence or Withdrawal processes.
  • Perform open house and orientation duties.
  • Plan and participate in orientation and registration activities.
  • Conduct student workshops and trainings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's degree required.
  • Five years' experience working at a university, preferably in Academic Student Services.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Comfortable working with students, administrators, deans, and faculty.
  • Ability to discuss student issues in a confidential manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to take independent initiative.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with the advising team.
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and database software.
  • Some evening and Sunday hours may be required.
