About the Role
As a Staff Application Database Architect, you will be the backend database expert behind the production applications and web services that power Heartflow's clinical and operational platform. This is a hands-on role focused on designing OLTP schemas, writing and tuning high-performance queries, and working directly within Python/Django services. You will also set the architectural direction for data structure, access, and governance across our AWS-based platform. Exposure to Data Lake, analytics pipelines, or AI-enablement work is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and own OLTP database systems, including schema design, query optimization, and performance improvements for high-throughput, low-latency web services.
- Define and implement best practices for database interaction within Python/Django services, addressing issues like N+1 queries and connection pool exhaustion.
- Set direction for database operations, including uptime, capacity, backups, recovery, schema evolution, and incident response.
- Own conceptual, logical, and physical data models for operational systems, ensuring consistent representation of clinical and operational data.
- Contribute to enriching the transactional data model with semantics for AI agents and downstream consumers.
- Ensure data architectures, flows, and access controls adhere to FDA, HIPAA, GDPR, and other applicable standards.
- Support the Data Lake & Analytics Handoff by ensuring OLTP source systems produce well-modeled data for downstream pipelines.
- Advance the Semantic Structure for AI Agent Context by contributing to the transactional data model with semantics.
Requirements
- Deep, hands-on expertise in relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Aurora, or equivalent) supporting production web applications.
- Strong experience building backend data layers for web applications and services in Python, with expert-level fluency in SQLAlchemy and/or the Django ORM.
- Expert-level conceptual, logical, and physical modeling for transactional/OLTP workloads.
- Experience with database engineering and DBA leadership, including performance tuning, partitioning, indexing strategy, replication, HA/DR, and operational excellence.
- Experience building data systems in modern cloud ecosystems, with AWS preferred.
- Experience working with clinical, imaging, or device data under regulatory regimes such as FDA, HIPAA, and GDPR.
- Technical leadership experience, including mentoring senior engineers and driving cross-team architectural decisions.
- Familiarity with Data Lake or lakehouse concepts is a plus.
- Exposure to metadata, schema registries, ontologies, or semantic layers is a plus.
