About the Role

The Peer Specialist provides supportive psychiatric rehabilitation services to PROS program participants, facilitating their integration into the community. The role empowers individuals to achieve life goals related to housing, work, education, and socialization, using a recovery-oriented, person-centered, strengths-based approach. The Peer Specialist will leverage their lived experience with mental illness to model the recovery process, supporting participants in articulating goals, learning new skills, and overcoming mental health barriers.

Responsibilities

• Provide concrete service delivery to clients as per program needs.
• Lead and co-lead recovery-oriented groups on topics such as self-advocacy, work and entitlements, daily living skills, and independent housing skills.
• Prepare participants for employment and support their ability to maintain employment.
• Meet individually with participants to provide support and facilitate problem-solving.
• Communicate with collaterals and other agency staff to ensure consistent service delivery.
• Participate in team meetings, supervision, Initial Case Conferences, and discharge planning meetings.
• Complete all documentation for services provided, outreach efforts, and collateral communications within program time-frames.
• Develop, implement, coordinate, and monitor a range of client-centered activities.
• Develop and maintain a Participants’ Resource Manual of community-based recovery resources.
• Take a leading role with the Consumer Advisory Board to train, model, and support participants in developing peer advocacy skills.
• Articulate the program’s philosophy, mission, and goals to a varied audience.
• Demonstrate sound judgment and good decision-making skills to manage unexpected events.
• Effectively present information to clients and staff in verbal and written formats.
• Attend trainings and meetings.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Ability to work within program guidelines with supervisor support.
• Ability to recognize and maintain confidentiality of information.
• Ability to travel independently using public transportation.
• Lived experience with a mental illness and recovery preferred.
• Familiarity with NYS entitlements, OMH housing services, and mental health services.
• Experience working with electronic medical records.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office.
• Ability to read paper and electronic documents.
• Ability to perform significant data entry into various computer programs.
• Candidate must be able to travel to sites that may or may not be ADA accessible.
• Awareness of risks/hazards associated with traveling around New York City.
