About the Role

The Care Ministry Director provides pastoral care to congregants and the community through officiant coordination, visitation, grief support, and short-term spiritual counseling. This role also involves recruiting, training, and developing lay pastoral care volunteers.

Responsibilities

  • Provide first line care to congregants and community, including timely response to prayer requests, visitations, grief meetings, and in-need meeting requests.
  • Offer grief support and short-term pastoral counseling or referrals.
  • Coordinate funeral and memorial services held at Riverbend Church, including communication with families, funeral homes, clergy, musicians, and staff; scheduling logistics; overseeing service flow; and ensuring spaces are prepared.
  • Arrange officiants for funeral, memorial, and inurnment services.
  • Coordinate Care Ministry events with Riverbend Remembrance Memorial Gardens staff when services involve the Gardens.
  • Coordinate Baptisms, including scheduling, candidate orientation, set-up arrangements, and certificate updates.
  • Coordinate Communion Services, including scheduling, element availability, set-up, and volunteer coordination.
  • Coordinate hospital, rehab, and assisted living visits to congregants.
  • Lead the recruitment and development of the Pastoral Care Lay Person Volunteers (PCLV) program, including training, scheduling, and leadership development.
  • Oversee and lead counseling and recovery ministry, serving as the point of contact for service providers and community organizations.
  • Help develop new programs, refer individuals to programs, and recruit individuals for 'life-change testimonies'.
  • Participate in staff and church meetings and functions.
  • Oversee the flow of memorials, funerals, baptisms, and dedications.
  • Provide lay pastoral counseling and shepherding under pastoral direction.
  • Be available after regular business hours and on weekends for urgent care needs.
  • Screen and route care requests.
  • Provide general support to visitors and callers.
  • Organize and schedule appointments.
  • Schedule and attend meetings as directed, securing rooms and taking minutes.
  • Write and distribute emails, correspondence, memos, letters, and forms for the Care Pastor.
  • Assist in the preparation of scheduled reports and presentations.
  • Support pastors in coordination with the Communications Department for event collateral.
  • Track and maintain a list of hospitalizations and ambulatory care recipients for pastoral visits.
  • Maintain and update weekly prayer requests for staff prayer time.
  • Assist other departments as directed to meet deadlines efficiently.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Graduate degree preferred) and 5+ years of ministry or similar Christian leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated discernment in confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, discretion, and a service orientation in all interactions.
  • Have a servant’s heart and be accommodating to other staff members, church congregants, and the public.
  • Manage phone calls, email, voicemail, and communication requests in a timely, thorough, and professional manner.
  • Willingness to engage in difficult conversations, without judgment.
  • Ability to spend substantial time with members, staff, patients, and their loved ones, requiring a high degree of emotional energy and mental alertness.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Adobe PDF.
  • Experience with or ability to quickly learn Riverbend Connect (CCB) and other in-house database software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Previous Administrative Experience (both in a serving and leading capacity).
  • Working knowledge of office equipment (e.g., printers, scanners, and other office machines).
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize work.
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Supervisory Skills: Manage direct and indirect staff and volunteers with effective directions, mentorship, communications, and feedback.
