About the Role

Provide pre-operative evaluations for all surgical patients with acute and chronic conditions in an ambulatory setting.

Responsibilities

  • Synthesize and interpret history, physical examination, and diagnostic testing data to evaluate patients for preparation for upcoming procedures.
  • Provide telephone consultation and follow-up phone calls, assessing needs and making recommendations or referrals as appropriate.
  • Refer patients to physicians and/or specialists as necessary.
  • Perform work-up and follow-up for patients seen in the office.
  • Review preoperative laboratory, EKG, and x-ray data, addressing significant abnormal findings promptly and reporting to the attending surgeon when appropriate.
  • Write preoperative orders according to patient needs and departmental guidelines.
  • Notify the attending surgeon of any issues regarding a patient that could potentially delay or cancel a procedure.
  • Maintain proficiency in the field by attending courses.
  • Comply with departmental Rules and Regulations as they apply to physician assistants.
  • Comply with hospital Rules and Regulations pertaining to Medical Records, codes/emergencies/disasters, and professional and ethical standards.
  • Train other students as requested.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Experience in internal medicine, inpatient care, or perioperative/surgical care highly preferred.
  • Must have strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Must be compassionate, warm, and patient-focused.
  • Must possess critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must have exceptional documentation skills and professional behavior.
