About the Role

The Director of Software Engineering provides strategic and technical leadership for the enterprise application portfolio, overseeing the full software development lifecycle. This role manages internal staff and external partners, ensuring high-quality engineering, platform modernization, and long-term sustainability of mission-critical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, delivery, and operation of enterprise application platforms.
  • Provide engineering leadership across the full software development lifecycle.
  • Build, develop, and retain a high-performing Software Engineering team.
  • Participate directly in architecture, system design, and key technical decision-making.
  • Establish and enforce engineering standards for code quality, testing, CI/CD, and security.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex production, performance, and integration issues.
  • Define and execute application modernization strategies including cloud-native and API-first design.
  • Partner with Infrastructure and Security teams to ensure 24/7 operational availability.
  • Evaluate architectural trade-offs regarding performance, security, and scalability.
  • Manage software vendors, consultants, and external development partners.
  • Evaluate and adopt emerging technologies, including AI-assisted engineering tools.
  • Contribute to overall IT strategy in partnership with cross-functional teams.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of progressively responsible software development experience.
  • 5+ years leading software engineering teams with responsibility for delivery and coaching.
  • Experience managing teams consisting of employees, consultants, and external partners.
  • Recent hands-on technical leadership experience in architecture and design reviews.
  • Ability to review source code, APIs, system designs, and data flows.
  • Experience owning enterprise application platforms in production.
  • Experience supporting highly available or mission-critical business systems.
  • Strong experience with cloud platforms and distributed systems, preferably Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience with containerized and cloud-native environments such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience integrating enterprise applications and third-party platforms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to pass a background investigation.
  • Ability to work a hybrid schedule.
