About the Role
The Verge is seeking a Lead Newsroom Analyst to drive insights that shape editorial strategy, subscriber growth, and product development. This role requires a blend of journalism, product, and data expertise, with the ability to translate performance data into actionable strategies and support product initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Work with editors and writers on content planning, leveraging historical performance data and understanding of The Verge's voice.
- Identify coverage gaps, audience curiosities, and emerging interest areas by monitoring story traffic and conversions.
- Pitch editors news hits and follow-ups with suggestions for framing, timing, and format.
- Lead and design regular strategy meetings with editorial leadership to review performance, trends, and conversion data.
- Embed in desks and partner with editors to implement changes based on reviews and track outcomes.
- Provide regular, accessible reporting analyses to leadership addressing KPIs across audience segments, story formats, topics, and desk-level performance.
- Support editorial with ad-hoc analyses and performance data to guide strategy.
- Maintain revenue models to support subscription planning, forecasting, and growth initiatives.
- Translate data into actionable financial projections for leadership.
- Use data to support the planning and launch of new premium products for The Verge's subscription program.
- Own paywall strategy analytics end-to-end: design and track paywall tests, interpret results, and provide recommendations.
- Optimize paywall strategy by identifying and supporting high-conversion opportunities within editorial coverage.
- Balance funnel priorities, balancing free news acquisition strategy with subscription goals.
- Serve as the primary analytics partner for product initiatives, owning instrumentation, reporting, and insight generation.
- Define and track product KPIs, building dashboards and writing custom SQL to monitor engagement, retention, and monetization metrics.
- Partner with Product and Engineering on experiment design, A/B test analysis, and data-driven decision-making.
- Translate complex product data into clear, actionable recommendations for non-technical stakeholders.
- Partner with the audience team to sharpen general off-platform distribution strategy.
- Refine The Verge's Apple News strategy—developing pitches, analyzing News+ performance, and identifying growth areas.
- Support The Verge's newsletter program, identifying opportunities to expand newsletters to improve subscriber growth and retention.
- Work with Product on editorial experiments, such as quick posts, homepage engagement tests, or content presentation optimizations.
Requirements
- Equally at home in a story pitch meeting and a Looker dashboard.
- Writing SQL in BigQuery.
- Strong instinct for what data can and can't tell you.
- Editorial judgment to bridge the gap between data and editorial needs.
- Ability to design a rigorous paywall test.
- Ability to present revenue projections to leadership.
- Ability to walk into a desk meeting with a sharp point of view on stories.
