About the Role

Family Service League is seeking a full-time Housing Specialist for their large family shelter. This role is responsible for assisting homeless families in obtaining permanent housing by working with clients, landlords, brokers, and the Department of Social Services.

Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive client intake within 5 business days of arrival.
• Develop individualized housing plans and instruct clients on housing log procedures.
• Provide clients with information, assist with documentation, and build skills to secure and maintain permanent housing.
• Assist clients in completing housing program applications and ensure timely submission.
• Stay current on potential housing availability.
• Collect required client housing logs weekly.
• Complete monthly DSS housing logs cover sheet for each client.
• Conduct face-to-face meetings with each client semi-monthly.
• Document all client contact and actions in progress notes.
• Connect with community realtors and housing agencies to develop new housing resources.
• Escort clients to apartment viewings and other appointments.
• Arrange for the timely completion of housing inspections.
• Assist clients in moving into permanent housing, including lease signing, utility setup, and transportation coordination.
• Participate in team meetings, case conferences, department meetings, supervisory sessions, and staff training.
• Read and understand the Policy and Procedure Manual.
• Read and respond to emails daily.
• Report to work during inclement weather and emergencies as an essential employee.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Prior experience in human services preferred.
• Knowledge of homeless population and DSS policies and regulations required.
• Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills required.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills required.
• Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office required.
• Bilingual in Spanish a plus.
• Valid and clean New York State Driver’s License required.
• Ability to sit and stand for extended periods.
• Ability to lift 10-15 pounds.
• Ability to go up and down stairs.
