About the Role

The Physician Assistant (PA) performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules studies, prescribes interventions and medications, and provides direct patient care and clinical support for Cardiothoracic Surgery Service Line initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Function as a first or second assistant during major and minor Cardiothoracic surgical procedures.
  • Harvest and prepare saphenous veins for coronary artery bypass grafting.
  • Be on-call for urgent or emergency surgical procedures outside of usual working hours.
  • Assist in preparation prior to surgery.
  • Perform H&Ps for Cardiothoracic Surgery patients, order tests, and review PAT results.
  • Write admission orders for patients admitted to the Cardiothoracic Surgery service.
  • Assist in providing pre- and post-operative care under surgeon supervision.
  • Write orders for lab tests, medications, and other patient care needs.
  • Write routine pre- and post-operative orders as necessary.
  • Perform routine procedures in the pre- and post-operative care of patients.
  • Insert catheters, nasogastric tubes, and intravenous infusions.
  • Remove various lines and chest tubes.
  • Perform emergency life-saving procedures in the absence of a physician.
  • Provide training and instructions for students and other professionals.
  • Discuss appropriate conduit with the attending surgeon prior to cases.
  • Write progress notes on patients’ charts.
  • Notify the supervising surgeon of unusual events or problems.
  • Write orders and documentation for physical restraints.
  • Remain in the hospital during regularly scheduled working hours unless excused.
  • Perform other duties and procedures as required for patient care and department functioning.
  • Perform procedures under the direction of the surgeon, including catheterization, intubation, injections, wound care, and starting infusions.

Requirements

  • PA must be a graduate of an accredited PA program.
  • New York State PA license required.
  • PA must have current NCCPA certification.
  • Must be BLS/ACLS/AED Certified by the American Heart Association.
  • DEA license required.

Experience Level

  • Previous Cardiothoracic Surgery preferred
  • Will consider new grad with relevant PA electives or clinical background

Education Level

  • Master’s preferred

Salary/Compensations

  • USD $74.67 - USD $93.00 /Hr.
