Responsibilities
- Manage case assignments from inception to resolution, including service of answer, discovery demands, motions, orders, court appearances, depositions, and trial.
- Maintain a diary to meet all deadlines for motions, orders, court appearances, and appeals.
- Meet all deadlines for initiating or responding to legal documents such as motions, opposition papers, and orders.
- Conduct oneself in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
- Adhere to the NYS Code of Ethics in performing duties as an attorney.
- Provide legal advice to HIC regarding liability and current law to facilitate speedy resolution of lawsuits.
- Appear in courts throughout the metropolitan area or at depositions for cases assigned to other attorneys when they are unavailable.
- Provide timely reports to the managing attorney regarding court and deposition appearances.
- Provide timely reports to the assigned claims supervisor or examiner.
- Alert the managing attorney to any problems with assigned files, such as defaults, preclusion orders, orders striking the answer, judgments, or excess verdicts.
- Research the law to stay current on liability, regulatory issues, and insurance coverage.
- Respond to emails and telephone messages in a timely manner.
- Provide all court appearance dates to the assigned legal staff member.
- Document all file activity in the activity log in a timely manner.
