About the Role
General Motors is seeking a Designer to expand our design system team. This role is central to developing and maintaining the GM Design System, ensuring consistency, accessibility, and quality across digital platforms.
Responsibilities
- Design and maintain robust, reusable components and patterns within the GM Design System.
- Build and manage shared libraries in Figma, including UI kits, tokens, and documentation.
- Design component, guidance, and documentation pages for Figma UI Kit/s.
- Partner closely with front-end developers to ensure designs are implemented accurately and efficiently.
- Create documentation, usage guidelines, and specs for system components.
- Ensure accessibility, scalability, and consistency across digital products.
- Collaborate with product designers, engineers, and brand teams across vehicle OS, web, and mobile to unify the system and encourage shared design language.
- Advocate for best practices in systems design, tooling, and handoff workflows.
- Conduct audits and propose system enhancements based on product needs and user feedback.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in HCI, Graphic Design, Visual Design, Interaction Design, Product Design, Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
- 3+ years of professional experience in digital product design, with a strong focus on design systems and component-based design.
- Deep expertise in Figma, including auto layout, variants, tokens, and library management.
- Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and a solid understanding of vector-based design and iconography.
- Experience designing for web, mobile, and software products, with an understanding of responsive and adaptive UI patterns.
- Strong knowledge of typography, visual hierarchy, and UI best practices.
- Experience with versioning, naming conventions, and scalable design workflows.
- Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG), prototyping tools, prototyping click-throughs, and design tokens.
- A systems-oriented mindset with an outstanding eye for detail and consistency.
- The ability to translate complex design needs into elegant, scalable solutions.
- Passion for collaboration—especially across design, engineering, and platform teams.
- Discipline in documentation, file hygiene, and naming conventions.
- A belief that the best design systems are built for real-world application—not theory.
