About the Role

The Logistics Development team drives speed, efficiency, and innovation across Zalando's fulfillment network through AI orchestration. As a Principal Enterprise Automation Engineer, you will be the technical visionary and lead builder for logistics automation, designing the macro-architecture for an ecosystem that balances high-volume automation with AI-native solutions. You will architect Human-in-the-Loop systems, mentor senior engineers, and build complex components.

Responsibilities

Serve as a 'Player-Coach,' designing scalable automation architectures and actively developing production-ready code.
Balance rapid sprint delivery between the Volume Engine (fast, high-volume automation) and the Impact Engine (AI-native solutions for complex processes).
Dictate the technology strategy by selecting the optimal tech stack (e.g., UiPath, n8n, Python, APIs) for operational challenges.
Integrate Agentic AI and LLMs (e.g., Gemini) to build workflows for complex, unstructured data.
Break down complex architectural blueprints, delegate tasks to senior engineers, and provide code review and technical guidance.
Design robust API architectures to link legacy systems (e.g., SAP) with modern AI orchestration tools.
Collaborate with Tech teams and operational SMEs to navigate compliance constraints and rapidly deploy solutions within 2-to-3-week sprint cycles.

Requirements

10+ years of hands-on experience in business processes, automation, and/or AI integration.
Proven ability to balance macro-architectural design with active coding.
Elite 'tool judgment' and deep architectural design experience across UiPath, n8n, Python, and enterprise APIs.
Practical, demonstrated expertise in Agentic AI architectures, prompt engineering, and integrating LLMs into business operations.
Understanding of the strategic difference between automating for volume versus deep process impact, and redesigning workflows to be AI-native.
Proven ability to design for scale, maintainability, and build robust exception-handling frameworks ('self-healing' workflows).
Strong technical leadership capabilities with a passion for mentoring senior developers and orchestrating work across high-velocity Agile sprints.
Hands-on experience with process mining/task mining and using AI tools to extract structured data from unstructured documents.
Master communicator and stakeholder manager, able to explain complex AI architectures and compliance risks to non-technical stakeholders.
