About the Role

The Recycling and Composting Educator will provide program implementation and administrative direction for Recycling, Composting and related Solid Waste programs. This role involves partnering with the Broome County Division of Solid Waste Management and assisting with program evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver recycling, composting, and other solid waste educational programs.
  • Teach existing educational and volunteer programs, including the Master Composter program.
  • Maintain the community composting demonstration site.
  • Foster acceptance of program methods and policies to address community needs.
  • Provide educational program efforts via mass media, including emails, phone messages, social media, and website postings.
  • Apply subject matter knowledge to deliver recycling and composting educational programs to various groups.
  • Utilize diverse educational methods to deliver programming related to recycling, composting, and solid waste management.
  • Serve as a subject matter resource for composting and recycling issues.
  • Contribute to the Cornell Cooperative Extension program effort through multi-disciplinary programs and activities.
  • Represent Cornell Cooperative Extension professionally to the public, community leaders, and government officials.
  • Implement program evaluation as designed.
  • Interact with stakeholders to collect evaluation data for program improvement.
  • Assist in making recommended program changes.
  • Communicate evaluation results and findings.
  • Assist supervisor in establishing program goals and priorities.
  • Provide input into the development of marketing strategies.
  • Assist in identifying community and fiscal resources for program enhancement.
  • Provide supervisor with program-related information for budget development.
  • Make recommendations to supervisor regarding program budgetary needs.
  • Assist in monitoring program to ensure educational content conforms to objectives.
  • Support volunteer management, including recruitment, screening, orientation, and support.
  • Assist with monitoring program financial status to ensure compliance with funding requirements.
  • Assist in identifying ways to reduce costs and maximize existing resources.
  • Provide programmatic guidance to staff on recycling/composting education.
  • Maintain communication with constituents and the community to increase program visibility.
  • Provide information to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories.
  • Schedule educational outreach directly with community and constituent groups.
  • Purchase approved program materials.
  • Compile, organize, and inventory educational materials.
  • Implement established program schedule.
  • Collect evaluation data from program participants.
  • Provide administrative support for communication strategies.
  • Collect program needs assessment data.
  • Assist in coordinating program implementation activities and planning efforts.
  • Submit program reports to meet funding agency requirements.
  • Provide administrative support to accomplish financial goals.
  • Perform general coordination activities, including attending staff meetings and reporting expenses.
  • Transport program participants and/or materials as needed.
  • Develop and pursue a professional development plan.
  • Collaborate in general support activities for Cornell Cooperative Extension.
  • Support the association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Follow applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources related field (i.e. environmental science or education, biology, natural resources, conservation) or Equivalent Education (Associate’s Degree and two (2) years of transferrable program/functional experience).
  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends.
  • Ability to plan, organize, implement and present effective and relevant educational lessons to participants and work with diverse audiences of all ages.
  • Ability to carry supplies and equipment, climb stairs with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Proficiency in the use of modern electronic technology and software (e.g., video, audio, computers, texting, Microsoft Office Programs, social media, internet and database software, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently and to effectively participate in professional team efforts.
  • Ability to work with all audiences from pre-school, school age and adult populations.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan and organize work responsibilities according to priorities developed with immediate supervisor.
  • Experience with recycling and/or composting education.
  • Experience working with community organizations.
  • Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place and ability to utilize program resources within the community.
  • Familiarity with a variety of program delivery methods to reach individuals and groups in youth and adult audiences and ability to integrate youth and adult development principles into educational activities.
