About the Role
The Controller is responsible for overseeing, directing, and administering the day-to-day accounting operations of the hotel, contributing to outstanding guest service and financial profitability.
Responsibilities
- Manage the daily function of the accounting office including AP, AR, Payroll, Income Auditing and General Cashiering, ensuring efficiency and accuracy.
- Monitor hotel revenues and expenses, ensuring accurate recording per HNSF guidelines.
- Investigate and critique variance to budget or prior year, offering improvement methodologies to management.
- Assist the CFO in preparing and maintaining the annual operation budget.
- Assist the CFO in developing and monitoring departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and oversee monthly KPI Meetings.
- Provide leadership and motivation to the accounting staff.
- Maintain property accounting controls such as cash, petty cash, and purchase orders, ensuring compliance with accounting policies.
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly.
- Work with department heads on understanding their departmental budget and forecast.
- Complete the "Month End" process, including preparing journal entries for Income, Payroll, Amortizing prepaid items, booking accruals, and other items.
- Respond to and resolve guest and staff difficulties courteously, professionally, and promptly.
- Interact with people beyond giving and receiving instructions, particularly with supervisors, subordinates, co-workers, and guests to complete assignments and resolve complaints.
- Interpret and comply with a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
- Perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.
- Maintain safety and cleanliness of the work area.
Requirements
- Bachelors Degree in Finance or Accounting.
- Minimum of 10 years in accounting experience with a minimum of 5 years in a managerial role.
- Must possess strong technical skills and have advanced proficiency in MS Excel and other accounting software.
- Thorough knowledge of budgeting and generally accepted accounting principles.
- Thorough knowledge of hotel innkeeping laws.
- Ability to direct and coordinate accounting functions.
- Ability to train, motivate, evaluate, mentor, and direct employees and managers to achieve desired results.
- Ability to maintain excellent relations with staff.
- Ability to manage by example.
- Exceptional oral communication skills to negotiate and persuade guests and staff.
- Ability to converse calmly with irate guests, superiors, and subordinates in intense emotional situations.
- Ability to work and complete assignments on time despite frequent stressful, emergency, critical, or unusual interruptions.
- Ability to participate in (and lead when necessary) all departmental and hotel-wide meetings.
