About the Role

Under direct supervision, provides patient care activities and performs related support functions.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and other employees.
  • Interact professionally, courteously, and appropriately with patients, visitors, and other employees.
  • Behave in a manner consistent with maintaining and furthering a positive public perception of BronxCare Health System and its employees.
  • Contribute to and participate in the Performance/Quality Improvement activities of the assigned department.
  • Utilize the principles of leadership established by the AONE and ANA regarding attitude, privacy, phone etiquette, appearance, work environment, customer acknowledgement, patient/customer information, call lights/client needs, and customer waiting.
  • Manage the flow of patients for assigned providers, monitor provider progress, and identify and retrieve the next scheduled patient.
  • Introduce self and escort patients to exam rooms using appropriate patient identification techniques.
  • Clean exam rooms prior to patient entry.
  • Perform two identifiers for patient identification.
  • Instruct patients to change into exam gowns when appropriate.
  • Complete screening tools in the EMR with patients.
  • Accurately perform and record vital signs, including blood pressure.
  • Perform phlebotomy, including finger sticks.
  • Perform vision and hearing testing.
  • Perform blood glucose testing using a glucometer.
  • Instruct patients and obtain specimens (sputum, urine, and stool).
  • Assist patients in the use of assisted devices such as walkers, canes, and crutches.
  • Transport patients, slips, specimens, and materials to and from areas.
  • Prepare and maintain work areas with supplies and assist with inventory.
  • Report changes in patient's conditions to the Registered Nurse.
  • Prepare patients for examination and assist providers during examinations.
  • Perform simple unsterile dressings.
  • Obtain and record patients’ weight and height accurately.
  • Assist patients in the use of incentive spirometers.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the organization's fire/safety plan, emergency preparedness plan, and patient safety goals.
  • Remove and/or report broken or damaged equipment promptly.
  • Check alarm settings on medical devices and ensure they are audible.
  • Check code cart/defibrillator based on hospital policy and ensure all institutional logs are updated.
  • Participate in fire drills and emergency drills.
  • Handle and properly dispose of regulated medical waste.
  • Wear employee ID badge at all times.
  • Comply with organizational procedures regarding absences, lateness, and timeliness of meal breaks.
  • Comply with patient rights standards and confidentiality; maintain patients’ need for privacy, respect, and dignity.
  • Practice infectious control standards.
  • Assess the physical environment and report conditions that negatively impact safety.
  • Communicate effectively with patients.
  • Attend all mandatory educational sessions appropriate to the area/unit.
  • Comply with hospital required competencies, including skills and HealthStream modules.
  • Identify learning needs and seek opportunities to address them.

Requirements

  • Two to three (2-3) years experience in an acute, chronic or ambulatory care setting.
  • Completed Patient Care Technician Course.
  • BLS certification.
  • Certification of PCT (Phlebotomy / EKG) completion.
  • High School or GED.
  • Computer Knowledge.
