About the Role

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Food and Nutrition, the Nutrition Service Worker performs a variety of food service functions including patient tray assembly and distribution, dish room activities, and cold food production. This role also involves patient services such as meal delivery and menu assistance, office functions like printing worklists and data entry, cafeteria service, catering assistance, and cash register operations.

Responsibilities

Performs patient tray assembly and distribution.
Performs dish room activities.
Adheres to general sanitation practices when handling food and equipment.
Maintains a clean and sanitized work space/area.
Delivers meals, nourishments, or floor stock to patients/residents.
Assists patients/residents with menu selection.
Assists patients/residents with tray set-up and opening containers.
Communicates related issues to the nutrition department or nursing station.
Prints worklists.
Completes a Delivery Cart Count sheet.
Completes Nourishment labels.
Enters data related to floor stock and nourishment costs.
Determines food production requirements based on production feedback.
Responds to communications from nursing staff, patients, and Nutrition Staff.
Answers departmental telephone calls and directs them accordingly.
Performs cold food production duties for patients, cafeteria services, and covers the deli station.
Serves customers in the hospital cafeteria.
Assists in catering hospital functions.
Covers catering shifts in the absence of the caterer.
Performs cash register functions during meal periods.
Manages currency and files required reports.
Attends to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.

Requirements

Must work well as a team member.
Must be able to push food carts with varying weights greater than 100lbs.
Must be able to lift items that weigh up to 50 lbs.
Readily learns and applies new procedures and technology.
Requires detailed attention and familiarity with proper patient identification procedures.
This is a bargaining union position.

Skills

Good verbal communication skills.
Customer service skills.
Telephone skills are helpful.
Basic knowledge of Safe Food Handling.
Some knowledge of the cash register operation is desirable.
Some previous experience handling currency (both Canadian and American).

Education Level

High School Diploma, GED Equivalent, or a Junior or Senior High School student with a reference letter from a faculty member preferred.
Prior experience in food service in a health care setting is preferred.
Some prior knowledge of special diets preferred.
Prior experience in patient setting is preferred.
Prior knowledge of various types of food preparation and familiarity with quantity food service equipment, quantify food service experience preferred.
