About the Role

The 8208 Park Ranger is an entry-level position responsible for providing public safety, park information, and protecting Recreation and Park Department properties. You will patrol assigned areas to prevent damage and respond to incidents.

Responsibilities

• Patrol and inspect buildings, facilities, parks, and department properties to deter violations and enhance public safety.
• Respond to dispatcher notifications and identify/report hazards, maintenance issues, and vandalism.
• Secure buildings and facilities by locking them at night and unlocking them for daytime use.
• Remove road obstructions and place barricades for road closures.
• Prevent improper, prohibited, or unsafe use of recreational facilities, fields, parks, roads, and equipment.
• Direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic during events, emergencies, and closures.
• Provide assistance, directions, and park information to the public.
• Interact with park users, community stakeholders, and the unhoused population.
• Apprehend or cite individuals engaged in vandalism, theft, and other criminal activity.
• Write reports when arrests are made, utilizing department systems for monitoring and record-keeping.
• Enforce regulations related to dogs, wildlife, and environmental protections.
• Coordinate response on wildlife issues with appropriate agencies.
• Enforce parking regulations by issuing citations for illegally parked vehicles.
• Enforce park code and applicable state or municipal codes, issuing citations for park misuse, alcohol/drug usage, and permit violations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• One (1) year of work experience as a police officer, military police unit member, park ranger, security officer/guard, or similar position involving protection of life and property or citation issuance and code enforcement.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license.
• Must obtain a valid California Class C driver’s license by the date of appointment.
• Must obtain California Penal Code Section 832 Powers of Arrest Certification within 6 months of employment.
• Applicants must submit verification (proof) of qualifying experience, licensure, certifications, and/or applicable education at the time of filing the application.
• Falsifying education, training, or work experience may result in disqualification.

• Successful completion of Basic P.O.S.T. Academy may substitute for required experience.
• Possession of thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units in criminal justice, administration of justice, or related field from an accredited college or university may substitute for required experience.
• Possession of an associate or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, administration of justice, or related field from an accredited college or university (Desirable)

Salary/Compensations

• $81,952 - $99,632 annually
