About the Role

This position performs humane animal care duties to ensure animal safety and well-being, manages kennel space, and provides quality customer service by assisting the public with information regarding Animal Management & Welfare policies, programs, and procedures. This role requires working shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather, with potential for overtime. This position is considered weather essential personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans, disinfects, and maintains shelter areas, including feeding, dishes, towels, and other peripheral equipment.
  • Feeds, waters, bathes, dips, and exercises animals.
  • Performs animal intake, claiming, and adoption activities.
  • Provides humane sheltering services in compliance with State minimum standards and Animal Management & Welfare policies.
  • Performs facility maintenance and repairs.
  • Safely and humanely handles animals of unknown health and temperament.
  • Monitors the physical condition of animals and advises the supervisor of ill or injured animals.
  • Assists in administering shots and other medications to animals as directed.
  • Assists in euthanizing animals and properly disposing of the remains.
  • Ensures the safety of animals and people in the shelter.
  • Performs animal inventories.
  • Prepares rabies specimens.
  • Assists in unloading trucks, stocking shelter areas, and storing materials and supplies.
  • Assists in the preparation, transport, and documentation of specimens for rabies testing.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must have or be able to obtain pre-exposure rabies vaccinations within six (6) months of hire.
  • Valid TX Drivers License is preferred.
  • Animal services work experience is preferred.
  • Ability to safely handle animals, including those with unknown health and temperament.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with other City employees and the public.
  • Ability to use and repair, on occasion, small equipment and tools.
  • The employee is required to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • The employee is also required to climb, crawl, crouch, feel, finger, grasp, handle, pull, push, reach, speak, stand, stoop, talk, see, and walk.
  • Requires the ability to make rational decisions and perform repetitive motions.
  • Work is performed outside the majority of the day and is required to work in all weather conditions.

  • Good interpersonal skills, particularly in dealing with fellow employees and the general public.

Salary/Compensations

  • Starting Pay: $15.30 per hour
