About the Role

Our Marine Underwriters collaborate with Broker partners to assess, price, and underwrite Marine insurance risks, including cargo, hull, and marine liability. This role is designed for an early-career underwriter with a commercial insurance background seeking to specialize in Marine underwriting within a leading Canadian insurer. It offers hands-on experience in risk selection, pricing strategy, and portfolio management, with training and mentorship to develop underwriting authority.

Responsibilities

Support the underwriting of Marine risks, including transit-based exposures and complex coverage structures, in accordance with established guidelines.
Analyze exposure, data quality, pricing adequacy, and coverage structure, including Marine policy wordings and clauses.
Collaborate with Underwriters, Corporate Underwriting, and Actuarial Pricing teams to ensure appropriate risk selection and pricing.
Maintain high underwriting and service standards.
Build strong relationships with Broker partners.
Apply market knowledge on the carrier side to underwrite complex Marine risks.
Influence pricing and coverage decisions.
Develop long-term technical expertise within a specialist portfolio.

Requirements

Commercial insurance underwriting fundamentals
Risk assessment, analysis, and decision-making skills
Ability to build and maintain strong Broker relationships
Willingness to learn and apply technical underwriting concepts
Clear communication and collaboration skills
1–5 years of underwriting experience, ideally within commercial lines, with relevance to Marine or specialty risks
Exposure to Marine insurance (underwriting, brokerage, MGA, or claims) is strongly preferred, or a genuine interest in specializing in Marine
Foundational understanding of how commercial insurance works
Strong customer service mindset
Team-first, eager-to-learn attitude
Completed, or currently pursuing, CIP (FCIP, CRM, or other designations are an asset)
Bilingualism (English/French) is considered a strong asset
Readiness for the next step in a career, seeking to move closer to underwriting decisions, technical development, and long-term career progression on the carrier side.
