About the Role

The Chief Sustainability Officer is a senior leader responsible for advancing Amalgamated Bank’s ESG strategy by integrating sustainability into client engagement, corporate advocacy, public communications, disclosures, and business execution. This role strengthens the Bank’s leadership position, supports transparent reporting, and deepens relationships in the environmental and sustainable business sector.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and evolves Amalgamated Bank’s corporate sustainability and CSR strategy.
  • Serves as a public representative of the Bank’s leadership through speaking engagements, media opportunities, and industry events.
  • Shapes and advances the Bank’s sustainability advocacy agenda.
  • Oversees the development and improvement of sustainability-related disclosures, reports, and communications.
  • Partners with credit, risk, and business teams to support revenue generation by applying sustainability expertise.
  • Recommends and assesses vendors, systems, processes, and controls to measure, monitor, and report ESG data.
  • Assesses Bank policies, products, and processes to strengthen alignment with sustainability commitments.
  • Meets with employees, customers, investors, analysts, and regulators to gather input and build alignment.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of sustainability programs and recommends improvements.
  • Drafts and supervises materials preparation for executive leadership, CEO, and Board of Directors.
  • Oversees the current portfolio of environmental sector clients and develops customer relationships.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation and records.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5+ years of relevant environmental, sustainability, ESG, or related strategic leadership experience, preferably within financial services or a regulated environment.
  • Thorough and current knowledge of bank sustainability practices, sustainability disclosure frameworks, and applicable laws, regulations, and stakeholder expectations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead external engagement and represent an organization effectively with investors, regulators, customers, industry groups, policymakers, and the media.
  • Strong experience drafting, reviewing, and overseeing sustainability-related disclosures, reports, presentations, and other communications.
  • Ability to support and influence the credit process by applying sustainability expertise.
  • Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, strategic, and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, sound judgment, and close attention to detail.
