About the Role
Under the direction of the School Age Child Care Director, the Site Assistant will assist with all program activities, including arts & crafts, music & drama, games, sports, group activities, science activities, quiet and homework time, Character Development, teambuilding, KidzLit, and Discovery Learning Centers. Employment is contingent upon clearing all NYS Office of Children and Family Services licensing requirements within the first 30 days of employment.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Site Coordinator in planning and developing lesson plans.
- Observe and follow School Age Child Care program guidelines and NYS Office of Children and Family Services regulations.
- Greet children and parents by name and extend thanks.
- Assist in promotion and leading of the annual family event and retention initiatives.
- Report to the program ready to work at designated times and prepared to stay until all children have left.
- Conduct the program in the Site Coordinator's absence.
- Perform general housekeeping tasks, clean up after activities, and ensure program areas are clean and organized.
- Provide a safe, healthy, moral, and fun environment for all children.
- Act as a positive role model for children.
- Foster an environment that includes YMCA character development values and teaches skills in team-building, good sportsmanship, friendship, and pride in doing one's best.
- Provide children with a daily snack that is wholesome, nutritious, and appropriate for their age group.
- Complete accident reports for all injuries or illnesses requiring first aid and discuss incidents with parents.
- Maintain a positive relationship with staff, parents, participants, school administration, and the community.
- Identify and resolve problems to ensure programs are meeting goals.
- Work additional hours when there is a scheduled half-day of school.
- Work half-day or full-day shifts when school is closed due to inclement weather or other unexpected reasons.
- Work during vacation camp on a part-time or full-time basis.
- Hand in completed time sheets on a bi-weekly basis.
- Follow attendance and call-in procedures.
- Complete a minimum of 30 hours of training every 2 years.
- Attend all staff meetings and training programs.
- Follow all YMCA policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Substantial experience working with children under 13 years of age.
- Must be at least 16 years of age, some sites may require 18 years of age.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Maturity, responsibility, and a sincere interest in working with people.
- Knowledge of various resources for programming ideas and the skills to utilize that information.
- Knowledge of age-appropriate activities and expectations of children ages 5 to 12.
- Complete an initial medical statement and tuberculin test prior to assignment.
- Undergo fingerprint and background screening within the first 30 days of employment.
- Obtain clearance on the State Central Register (SCR) and Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCL) within the first 30 days of employment.
- Complete online Bloodborne Pathogens, Employee Safety and Youth Protection Series trainings prior to initial assignment.
- Hold CPR, AED, and O2 certifications or successfully complete within 30 days after employment begins.
- Complete online Hazard Communication training within the first 90 days of employment.
- Attend and complete New Employee Orientation, Listen First Level 1, and Quality Service Training within the first 90 days of employment.
