About the Role
Under the direction of the School Age Child Care Director, the Site Assistant will assist with all program activities, including arts & crafts, music & drama, games, sports, science activities, quiet time, and homework help. Employment is contingent upon clearing NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) licensing requirements, including fingerprinting and background screening within the first 30 days. Prior to assignment, a medical statement and tuberculin test are required.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Site Coordinator in planning and developing lesson plans.
- Observe and follow School Age Child Care program guidelines and NYS OCFS regulations.
- Greet children and parents by name and extend thanks.
- Assist in promoting and leading the annual family event and retention initiatives.
- Report to work on time and prepared to stay until all children have left.
- Conduct the program in the Site Coordinator's absence.
- Perform general housekeeping tasks, clean up after activities, and ensure program areas are clean and organized.
- Provide a safe, healthy, moral, and fun environment for all children.
- Act as a positive role model for children.
- Foster an environment that includes YMCA character development values and teaches life skills.
- Provide children with a daily snack that is wholesome, nutritious, and age-appropriate.
- Complete accident reports for all injuries or illnesses requiring first aid and discuss incidents with parents.
- Maintain a positive relationship with staff, parents, participants, and the community.
- Work additional hours during scheduled half-days of school.
- Work half-day or full-day shifts when school is closed due to inclement weather or other unexpected reasons.
- Work during vacation camp on a part-time or full-time basis as needed.
- Submit completed time sheets bi-weekly.
- Follow attendance and call-in procedures, notifying the Site Coordinator of any absence.
- Complete a minimum of 30 hours of training every 2 years.
- Attend all staff meetings and training programs.
- Follow all YMCA policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Substantial experience working with children under 13 years of age.
- Must be at least 16 years of age (some sites may require 18).
- Excellent organizational and communication skills (verbal and written).
- Maturity, responsibility, and a sincere interest in working with people.
- Knowledge of programming resources and ability to utilize them.
- Knowledge of age-appropriate activities and expectations for children ages 5 to 12.
- Complete an initial medical statement and tuberculin test prior to assignment.
- Undergo fingerprint and background screening within the first 30 days of employment.
- Obtain clearance on the State Central Register (SCR) and Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCL) within the first 30 days.
- Complete online Bloodborne Pathogens, Employee Safety, and Youth Protection Series trainings prior to initial assignment.
- Hold CPR, AED, and O2 certifications (First Aid may be required) or complete within 30 days of employment.
- Complete online Hazard Communication training within the first 90 days of employment.
- Attend and complete New Employee Orientation, Listen First Level 1, and Quality Service Training within the first 90 days.
- Ability to frequently stand, sit, walk, talk, hear, type, run, jump, kick, catch, throw, climb, kneel, bend, reach, balance, crouch or crawl, reach with hands and arms, handle or feel, stoop, lift/move and carry approximately 35 pounds, and use hands and fingers.
- Ability to lift and/or maneuver large gym equipment.
- Special vision abilities required: distance, peripheral, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
