About the Role

The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education (CBVRCE) is seeking applicants for a Bus Driver position to support approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools. The CBVRCE fosters a caring, dynamic, and creative environment committed to ensuring the success and achievement of all students within a culturally responsive, safe, and inclusive school environment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a school bus in accordance with all safety standards as prescribed by the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia and in accordance with School Board Policies and Procedures
  • Perform pre trip inspections at the beginning of each work day
  • Perform pre-trip inspections prior to extra/co-curricular trips
  • Complete all transportation related forms as required (Hours of Work, Route & Passenger Sheets, Daily Inspection Sheets, etc.)
  • Maintain discipline on school buses and follow Board Policies and procedures of incidents on buses.
  • Report all accidents in accordance with Board policy and procedures
  • Keep inside and outside of bus clean in accordance with Board standards
  • Reports mechanical problems to appropriate designate
  • Operate the school bus in accordance with route plan and schedule
  • Attend all driver inservices provided by the board
  • Other related duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Upload a completed resume with application
  • Upload copies of professional licenses, accreditations and certifications supporting qualifications
  • Include a copy of Driver's Licence and Driver's Abstract
  • Enter 3 work-related references (Managers or Supervisors preferred)
  • Class 1, 2 or 3 NS Driver’s Licence and 6 months’ experience driving large commercial vehicles (ie. large bus, semi-trailer/tractor trailer combinations, etc.) is preferred.
  • Drivers with a Class 5 NS Driver's Licence, together with a clear Driver's Abstract and significant experience working with children and youth may be considered.
  • WHIMIS certification
  • Demonstrated ability to do work as required in the posted positions
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others and provide assistance
  • Reliable and conscientious
  • Acceptable record of attendance in previous employment.
  • Acceptable Abstract of Drivers License.
  • Demonstrated high standard of safety
  • Ability to effectively relate to students.
  • Ability to do proper daily bus inspections and complete forms required.
  • Valid Standard First Aid certification
  • Acceptable Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Checks
  • Successful casual bus driver applicants who do not have Class 2B with Air Brakes Certification, must be willing to obtain one through CBVRCE's training program.
  • Must sign a Return of Service Agreement to work a minimum of one thousand (1000) hours as a Bus Driver within two (2) years of successful completion of the training program.

  • Casual on-call basis
  • 10 Month (September to June)

Experience Level

  • 6 months' experience driving large commercial vehicles preferred

Education Level

  • Grade 12 education or acceptable equivalent in experience and training

Salary/Compensations

  • $28.82 per hour

Benefits

  • Training program for Class 2B with Air Brakes Certification
  • Remuneration during training program at minimum wage rate (up to 15 days, 8 hours per day)
  • Subject to Collective Agreement with CUPE Local 5050
