About the Role

The Office of Legal Affairs provides legal guidance and litigation support to the Department of Social Services to ensure compliance with laws and regulations. The Agency Attorney Interne will support the Adult Protective Services Litigation and Program Counseling Unit (APS/LPCU) in protecting vulnerable adults through guardianship and housing court proceedings.

Responsibilities

  • Provide counsel to APS LPCU program areas on social service matters
  • Draft legal memoranda and policy guidance
  • Render litigation support for Mental Hygiene Law Article 81 guardianship, Civil and Housing Court matters, and administrative fair hearings
  • Review and redact agency case records in response to subpoenas to ensure legal compliance
  • Represent the Commissioner in court motions, hearings, and petitions
  • Research statutes and case law to resolve legal questions
  • Determine the advisability of presenting witnesses and evidence
  • Perform other related legal tasks

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited United States law school as defined in the Rules of the New York Court of Appeals
  • Admission to the New York State Bar
