About the Role

The Department of Homeless Services is recruiting a Superintendent to oversee the day-to-day operations of the agency’s Single Adult, Adult Families and Families with Children’s intake and assessment sites. This role ensures vulnerable populations can access shelter services 24/7.

Responsibilities

• Monitor shelter operations to ensure compliance with agency standards, regulations, and local laws for sanitation, health, and environmental standards.
• Oversee the activities of security personnel in collaboration with security site managers.
• Serve as Certified Fire Safety Coordinator, ensuring facility compliance with fire code regulations.
• Provide oversight and direction to comprehensive programs including social service, recreation, medical, occupational, mental health, and substance abuse recovery.
• Evaluate program operations and services effectiveness, ensuring maximum utilization of services for clients and facilitating new program implementation.
• Participate in planning policies, procedures, and programs, and interface with local Community Boards to promote good community relations.
• Assume duties of the Deputy Director of Operations in their absence.

Requirements

• Permanent in the Assistant Superintendent of Welfare Shelters Civil Service Title or permanent in a comparable title eligible for 6.1.9 Title Change.
• A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of full-time experience in management of a hotel, resort, lodging house, home for the aged, nursing home, or congregate care institution; or as a commissioned/non-commissioned officer in command of a military/paramilitary unit, or supervising law enforcement specialist; or supervision of at least five individuals providing social services to a disadvantaged client population.
• Education and/or experience equivalent to the above.
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college may substitute for two years of experience.
• A master's degree in social work from an accredited school may substitute for one additional year of experience.
• Casework experience in a Welfare Shelter or comparable institution may substitute on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four years.
• All candidates must possess a four-year high school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of supervisory experience in one or more of the specified areas.
