About the Role

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges manages over 800 bridges and tunnels, ensuring public safety and mobility. Team members may work on major project designs, oversee construction, perform engineering reviews, and quality assurance tasks on complex projects.

Responsibilities

• Serves as Geometric Design Engineer of the In-House Design CADD/Highway Engineering section.
• Performs difficult and technically complex work in Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) related to geometric design.
• Assists Engineer-In-Charge on projects of technical complexity impacting NYCDOT engineering operations and city infrastructure.
• Performs complex work in street and highway engineering related to bridge design projects.
• Prepares geometric standards for bridges and approaches in accordance with NYSDOT and FHWA standards.
• Prepares design of drainage systems and pavement in accordance with NYCDOT/NYSDOT/FHWA standards.
• Advises and trains subordinate personnel in engineering responsibilities.
• Performs other related duties.

Requirements

• Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in civil engineering work.
• A valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License.
• Current New York State registration as a Professional Engineer must be maintained for the duration of employment.
• A masters degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of civil engineering experience.
• For Assignment Levels II and III, at least one year within the last three years of experience as a major contributor or project leader on a complex project requiring specific expertise in design or construction disciplines.

Skills

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong background in geometric design.
• Proficiency in Civil 3D software for highway and street design.
• Recent experience in CAD drafting.
• Recent experience in highway-related design.
• Recent experience in the preparation of contract bid documents for bridge rehabilitation projects.
• Working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
• NYS driver's license.

Work Type

• 35-hour base work week
• Hybrid work may be available (up to two days per week from home, depending on position)
