About the Role
As a Senior Public Health Strategist, you will make a significant contribution to improving residents' health and wellbeing and tackling health inequalities across Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea. This role involves managing and reviewing programmes and services, turning strategy into action, and embedding public health principles into council activities. You will work closely with colleagues, senior management, and stakeholders to deliver tangible public health outputs and shape public health change at the local level.
Responsibilities
- Manage and review programmes and services that support council priorities, meet Public Health statutory requirements, and respond to local needs.
- Deliver tangible public health outputs by working closely with colleagues, wider strategic leads, Heads of Service, and partners.
- Use evidence and insight to manage competing priorities and shape plans in a fast-moving local government environment.
- Help public health thinking reach beyond the Public Health team by supporting the effective use of Public Health skills and funding across the councils.
- Embed public health principles into services, commissioning, and wider council activity.
- Build strong relationships with senior management teams and other stakeholders, acting as a trusted adviser.
- Coach, influence, and respectfully challenge where needed, using sound judgement, resilience, and political awareness.
- Contribute to the wider team’s culture, development, and business planning.
- Model the council’s values, behaviours, and key Public Health competencies.
Requirements
- At least three years’ experience working in public health or a similar role within the NHS, a local authority, or another relevant setting.
- Expertise in turning evidence into work that improves outcomes for residents and communities.
- Confidence in carrying out health needs assessments, bringing together data, information, and evidence.
- Ability to evaluate public health interventions, measure their impact, and use learnings to improve services.
- Understanding of the commissioning cycle and service design.
- Ability to manage several pieces of work simultaneously.
- Organised, self-motivated, and able to work independently with limited supervision.
- Confidence working with senior stakeholders, leading meetings, and building trust across different organisations.
- Ability to work with residents and communities, bringing different perspectives together.
- Analytical and curious, with the ability to get to grips with new information quickly.
- Proficiency in quantitative analysis to develop proposals and make a strong case for change based on evidence.
- Excellent communication skills, including writing detailed reports, presenting to groups, and handling difficult conversations tactfully.
- Understanding of best practice in public health, and the wider political, financial, and organisational pressures facing local government and the NHS.
- Ability to work in partnership, spot barriers early, and find practical solutions.
- Strong IT and AI skills, including Copilot, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Commitment to excellent public services, a can-do attitude, honesty, integrity, and a values-led approach.
