About the Role
This role is critical to building and operating the systems that power personalized discovery at scale. You will own production services written in Go and Python that serve real-time recommendations across multiple surfaces, integrating tightly with machine-learning models and experimentation platforms.
Responsibilities
- Delivering, enhancing, and maintaining the recommendation system, ensuring it is robust, scalable, and observable.
- Working closely with other engineers on backend engineering and front-end related components.
- Collaborating with data engineering, data science, and product partners to translate recommendation strategies and models into production-grade engineering solutions.
- Designing, building, and operating the full recommendation flow from candidate retrieval to re-ranking, ensuring strict latency, availability, and correctness requirements.
- Building low-latency, high-throughput services in Go and Python that expose recommendation APIs, orchestrate model inference, and integrate with feature stores, vector databases, and downstream consumers.
- Owning the lifecycle of recommendation systems, including data contracts, offline/online consistency, feature freshness, and backfills, ensuring correctness, reproducibility, and debuggability.
- Operating Tier-1 recommendation services with strong observability, alerting, and incident response, continuously improving reliability, tail latency, and throughput.
- Following strong engineering practices across Go and Python codebases, including testing strategies, CI/CD, safe rollouts, and performance regression detection.
- Enabling fast iteration through A/B testing, shadow deployments, and controlled rollouts, partnering with Product and Data Science to support model experimentation while maintaining system stability.
Requirements
- Ability to convert high-level requirements into production-quality deliverables with some guidance.
- Consideration for how code fits into the overall ecosystem.
- Willingness to own and maintain tier-1 services, taking measured risks and applying prior learnings.
- Comfort with responsibility when provided with sufficient context.
- Experience with systems serving high-throughput live traffic.
- Familiarity with Go and Python, with experience on past projects serving production traffic at large scale, ideally in data-intensive or ML-enabled systems with strict performance requirements.
- Strong problem-solving skills, able to break down vague problem statements, propose solutions, and execute them.
- Collaborative mindset, able to balance short-term goals with long-term solutions and align personal ambitions with team goals, with guidance from senior engineers.
