About the Role

We are looking for a Staff Engineer to own the technical quality bar for the team. This role involves defining architecture, build-versus-buy decisions, and establishing engineering standards for tooling, guardrails, and automation. You will be responsible for the engineering harness, ensuring reliability, security, and efficient parallel development, while also acting as a bar raiser for the team. This is a hands-on position requiring code contribution, code review, and setting standards for testing, observability, security, and deploys. You will collaborate with the founders on the technical roadmap, focusing on both classical systems and AI.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical quality bar, defining and enforcing standards across architecture, testing, observability, security, and performance.
• Make architectural decisions regarding service boundaries, data models, AI infrastructure, and system failure/recovery.
• Own build vs. buy decisions, evaluating core functionalities versus vendor solutions.
• Build the engineering harness, including tooling and automation for reliable parallel shipping and AI-assisted development workflows.
• Lay the foundation for mission-critical systems by building reliability, monitoring, and safety properties.
• Tackle complex problems, including production incidents and system redesigns.
• Mentor engineers, sharpen designs, and multiply the team's output.
• Shape the technical roadmap with the founders, providing input on sequencing, risk, and technological direction.

Requirements

• Staff-level experience as a backend or full-stack engineer with a track record of owning high-traffic or high-stakes systems.
• Deep experience in AI/ML engineering, including building and operating LLM-powered or ML systems in production.
• Proven ability to make architectural decisions at scale and understand their consequences.
• Strong judgment on build vs. buy, infrastructure investment, and system rigor.
• Experience setting and enforcing engineering standards that improve team velocity.
• Passion for staying current with cutting-edge software engineering practices.
• Experience leading teams and raising their technical bar.
• Hands-on experience writing and reviewing code.
• Comfort with ambiguity and a proactive approach to defining processes.
• Strong ML engineering backgrounds are welcome if accompanied by deep software engineering depth.
• Experience in healthcare or regulated industries (HIPAA, PII/PHI handling, auditability) is a plus.
• Experience with real-time systems, voice, or event-driven architectures is a plus.
• Experience as an early engineer at a scaling startup is a plus.
• Familiarity with Python, TypeScript, FastAPI, Next.js, and Postgres is a plus.
