About the Role

Guardian Australia is seeking a fronts editor to curate and present stories across its website, Google News, and Apple News, with additional digital editing responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Display stories on Guardian Australia’s website effectively and imaginatively, in liaison with newsdesk and audience editors
  • Use data analysis tools to ensure optimal performance of stories on all platforms, and to develop strategies for the best use of Guardian content
  • Send breaking news alerts to the Guardian app, subscribers to email alerts and Apple News in liaison with newsdesk editors
  • Monitor live blogs for potential headline changes to complement news stories
  • Select impactful images, illustrations and video in conjunction with the picture desk and the multimedia team
  • Communicate with third party platforms such as Apple News to promote Guardian stories to best advantage
  • Liaise with global Guardian teams on best practice for fronts editing
  • Monitor internal analytics and other fronts (UK, US, EU, International) for their best pieces to present on Australia front
  • Manage story selection for Google Showcase
  • Suggest headline changes, images or video to improve the performance of stories on the front
  • Fulfil newsdesk editing shifts as directed

Requirements

  • Experience in curating a digital news site
  • Strong news judgment
  • Editing, sub-editing and production experience
  • Knowledge of external platforms such as Google and Apple News
  • Data analysis experience
  • Good understanding of media law
  • Interest in and wide knowledge of the output of Guardian Australia
  • Understanding of the editorial aims and values of the Guardian
  • Awareness of the needs and interests of the Guardian’s readers/audiences

  • A passion for independent journalism and an understanding of our editorial code and values
  • Excellent writing, communication and production skills
  • Meticulous eye for detail, grammar and spelling
  • Good news sense and ability to handle writers’ copy sensitively
  • Ability to learn and apply new skills quickly
  • Willingness to take responsibility for editing decisions, in collaboration with the news desk
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills
  • Ability to edit copy quickly and accurately under pressure
  • Flair for writing headlines and other page furniture
  • Team player, enthusiastic with strong interpersonal skills
  • Logical, imaginative, adaptable and flexible
  • Open to feedback and constructive criticism
