Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance, modifications, inspections, replacement, and repairs of sprinkler systems, fire pumps, fire hoses, standpipe systems, clean agents, private hydrants, and other fire and life safety equipment.
• Conduct component replacement on fire sprinkler systems, standpipe risers, and clean agent systems.
• Perform hydrostatic testing on sprinkler and standpipe fire department connections.
• Provide expert input on the repair and modification of fire protection systems, recommending design adjustments for compliance with the Ontario Fire Code.
• Coordinate and direct external contractors for emergency repairs, major system failures, and modifications.
• Inspect completed repairs by fire protection contractors to ensure full completion and adherence to codes and standards.
• Identify and report deficiencies and code violations, providing recommendations for corrective action.
• Coordinate repairs between contractors, building occupants, and tenants.
• Document inspection results, identify deficiencies, and initiate escalation through formal reporting.
• Prepare and maintain reports and inspection records for fire and life safety equipment and systems.
• Travel to various properties, potentially entering confined spaces and working in mechanical/electrical rooms.
• Notify relevant parties of fire protection system shutdowns for repairs or replacement.
• Arrange for system repairs and/or alterations in conjunction with Fire Technicians and Supervisors.
• Utilize Building Reports Canada and work order management systems for inspections and tracking deficiencies.
• Provide operating instructions and information on fire protection systems to building maintenance staff.
• Carry tools, materials, and equipment to and from job sites.
• Review and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.

Requirements

• Completion of secondary school combined with craft training and experience equivalent to a minimum four-year apprenticeship program.
• Possession of a valid 427A Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer Certificate of Qualification (Red Seal), or equivalent.
• Successful completion of the Certificate of Qualification examination issued by Skilled Trades Ontario.
• Valid Province of Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a City Operator’s Permit.
• Understanding and application of concepts, principles, and methods of a complex skilled trade related to fire protection systems and life safety infrastructure.
• Demonstrated advanced knowledge of wet, dry, pre-action, and deluge sprinkler systems; fire pumps; standpipe systems; fire alarm systems; clean agent systems; and private hydrants.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, system designs, inspection protocols, and compliance documentation.
• Working knowledge of applicable legislation, codes, and standards, including the Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code, NFPA and ULC standards, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
• Registration as a Technician with the Canadian Fire Alarm Association (CFAA) is considered an asset.
