About the Role

The Bright Corner Respite Center (CRC), part of Parachute NYC, offers a unique hospital diversion model providing temporary residential/respite care in a supportive, home-like environment. Guests learn recovery and relapse prevention skills through 24-hour peer support, self-advocacy education, and self-help training. The CRC serves individuals experiencing psychosis-related crises with short-term residential alternatives (1-14 days), enabling them to maintain daily activities and connect with community services. The program incorporates Need Adapted Treatment and Intentional Peer Support.

Responsibilities

• Develop partnerships with guests experiencing crisis using trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, intentional peer support.
• Promote a safe, comfortable, secure, and trusting environment where guests are listened to and respected.
• Practice the Need Adapted Treatment Model (NATM) and Intentional Peer Support (IPS) after training.
• Utilize personal lived experience with the mental health system to support guests' recovery processes.
• Create community through mutual sharing of lived experiences, offering encouragement and support for daily activities.
• Assist with the pre-registration process for referred and self-referred guests.
• Assist with intake and registration, including explaining services, providing tours, and introductions.
• Collaborate with other Parachute NYC staff to help guests identify and achieve short-term personal goals.
• Facilitate individual and group educational, recovery, wellness, and skill-building opportunities (e.g., wellness self-management, WRAP, peer support, harm reduction).
• Follow up with guests to monitor and support progress toward goal achievement.
• Advocate for and facilitate access to needed healthcare services, proactively addressing barriers like missed appointments, transportation, fear, stigma, and communication issues.
• Assist guests with meal preparation, medication management, personal care, and maintaining a clean living environment.
• Complete timely and accurate documentation of interactions, services, critical information, events, collateral contacts, and referrals.
• Provide household upkeep duties as needed.
• Serve daily cold breakfast and assist guests with accessing snacks.
• Encourage guest participation in the documentation process.
• Participate in data collection and recording for outcomes, research, and agency/grant priorities.
• Participate in supervision, team meetings, interagency meetings, case conferences, and other required meetings.
• Provide flexible evening, night, weekend, and holiday coverage.

Requirements

• 1 year of work experience in a behavioral health or related setting, preferably using the recovery model.
• Must have lived experience with the mental health system and willingness to share personal experience appropriately and respectfully.
• Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
• Ability to utilize critical thinking, problem-solving, and de-escalation skills to promote recovery.

Skills

• Ability to utilize various computer programs, specifically Microsoft Word and Excel (preferred).
• Graduate of core peer specialist training program (preferred).
• Respect for and high level of comfort around people experiencing psychiatric crisis (preferred).
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including empathic listening and responding (preferred).
• Bilingual English/Spanish (a plus).
