About the Role

Perform technical duties associated with the delivery of pharmaceutical services, including medication distribution and inventory management, sterile and non-sterile compounding, medication reconciliation, and cross-functional proficiency. This role requires technical expertise and strong communication skills, with the ability to adapt to departmental needs and uphold the ideals of professional behavior, patient-centered care, and fiscal responsibility within a High Reliability Organization (HRO).

Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain regular review of medication systems, automated dispensing machines, code carts, and other inventory management tools, restocking as needed.
  • Ensure proper medication movement through stock rotation based on expiration and usage patterns.
  • Remove expired or soon-to-be-expiring medications from inventory.
  • Accurately receive medications from wholesale and replenish pharmacy stock.
  • Prepare sterile and non-sterile compounding products safely and according to current standards and hospital policy.
  • Complete cleanroom standards and documentation per departmental guidelines.
  • Perform necessary mathematical calculations and drug manipulation to accurately prepare and label medications.
  • Improve medication safety by assisting pharmacists in collecting up-to-date medication lists for admitted patients.
  • Utilize all available resources to obtain the best possible medication list.
  • Update and clarify allergy information in the patient's electronic health record.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit.
  • Remain adaptable to using basic office equipment and pharmaceutical devices.
  • Perform basic functions of specialty technician assignments (e.g., OR/Anesthesia, Purchasing/Narcotic).
  • Assure adequate documentation and knowledge of Pharmacy/Hospital Policies and Procedures for compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in various technologies used in pharmaceutical care, including EMR, ADS, Inventory Management software, and labeling programs.
  • Communicate problems to the pharmacist, including any special or technical issues related to patient care.
  • Meet performance expectations for Customer Service, Teamwork, Resource Utilization, and Staff and Self Development.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous hospital experience as a Pharmacy Technician preferred.
  • Community/retail pharmacy technician experience or academic training/experience in health-related fields also considered.
  • Registration with the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection is required by completion of probationary period.
  • Active Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or equivalent certification is required on or within 1 year of the date of hire.
  • Weekend availability is required (position typically covers every other weekend).
  • Ability to effectively work with computer and technology equipment, including the ability to perform basic troubleshooting related to said technology.
