About the Role
The Audiovisual Archivist manages the Austin History Center’s audiovisual collections across multiple formats, including videotape, motion picture film, audio recordings, and born‑digital materials. This role involves acquiring, cataloging, digitizing, describing, and retrieving collection items, while providing archival reference and reproduction services to support outreach initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Appraise, organize, process, catalog, and conserve archival collections and materials.
- Curate collection units by making selection and acquisition decisions.
- Compile finding aids, reference guides, articles, statistics, and reports.
- Provide archival reference and research services.
- Assist with the acquisition and appraisal of collections.
- Conduct public liaison activities including lectures, media appearances, and interviews.
- Explain research policies, procedures, and methods to customers.
- Coordinate and conduct meetings, training, tours, and public programs.
- Assist in planning exhibits by organizing and interpreting historical records.
- Register donations into the collection and maintain donor records.
- Serve as the in-charge staff person in management’s absence.
- Provide leadership, work assignments, evaluation, training, and guidance to others.
- Operate and maintain playback and transfer equipment.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited university with specialization in archival enterprise or administration, plus two years of professional experience in a cultural heritage institution.
- Master’s degree in History/Public History with coursework in archival administration or a related field may substitute for the Library/Information Science degree.
- Ability to read, write, and speak fluently in English.
- Valid operator’s license and access to a personal vehicle may be required.
- Ability to travel to multiple work locations.
- Must be able to work weekends on a rotating basis.
Skills
- Knowledge of archival and Encoded Archival Description standards.
- Knowledge of reference tools and procedures.
- Knowledge of records management issues and practices.
- Knowledge of digital imaging and electronic records management.
- Skill in processing and arranging archival collections.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to appraise records for historical significance.
- Experience with legacy audiovisual collections and playback equipment.
- Experience leading large-scale digitization projects.
- Experience managing digital assets in a digital asset management system.
