About the Role
The Senior Audit Associate will lead and perform Public Sector audit engagements, overseeing audit staff at client premises, managing the engagement in the field, and executing audit procedures. This role involves applying technical skills, identifying best practices, researching complex accounting topics, and maintaining client satisfaction.
Responsibilities
- Oversee multiple client engagements in the public sector division and manage engagements within allotted time budgets.
- Apply technical skills, identify best practices and improvements, and consider their applicability to other clients.
- Research complex accounting topics and form conclusions using the Firm’s research tools.
- Maintain active communication with clients to manage expectations and ensure satisfaction.
- Identify and communicate suggestions to management for improving client internal controls and accounting procedures.
- Understand internal control deficiencies, train entry-level staff on internal control processes, and develop comments for management letters.
- Understand the risk assessment process and apply knowledge in completing related forms.
- Prepare financial reports (statements, notes, supplemental information) and other client deliverables.
- Adhere to the highest degree of professional standards and strict client confidentiality.
- Apply industry trends to analytics, formulate expectations, and determine reasonableness.
- Provide team direction, play a key role in audit engagement execution from planning to wrap-up, and develop audit program steps to identify risks.
- Express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in written form, and document findings.
- Manage engagement staff to meet deliverable deadlines, identify roadblocks, and understand critical milestones.
- Provide quality on-the-job training and constructive feedback to Interns and Staff.
- Actively participate in learning and development opportunities, formal learning (CPE), and training programs.
- Attend professional development, networking events, and training seminars regularly.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college/university required.
- MS degree in Accounting is a plus.
- 3+ years of progressive audit experience in public accounting required.
- CPA certification preferred or demonstrated progress towards obtaining CPA certification, including required 150-credit coursework.
- Public Sector (i.e. schools, municipalities, counties, etc) experience required.
- Applied knowledge of Generally Accepted Auditing Principles (GAAP) for governments, Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS), and Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS).
- General knowledge of the Uniform Grant Guidance for federal compliance audits.
- Proficiency in Excel, Word, and PFX Engagement audit software.
- Excellent analytical, technical, and auditing skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and strong work ethic.
- Ability to research complex accounting and auditing issues.
- Ability to work additional hours as needed to meet client deliverables.
- Must have access to a car and be willing to travel locally to clients when required.
- Must be able to work in-office a minimum of 3 days per week.
- Currently authorized to work in the United States.
