About the Role

The Phlebotomist aims to serve patients by preparing specimens for laboratory testing and performing screening standards. The Phlebotomist shall draw quality blood samples while creating an atmosphere of trust and confidence.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data and decontamination, and update patient information.
  • Greet customers appropriately and treat all customers courteously.
  • Collect specimens according to established procedures, explaining the venipuncture process clearly and courteously.
  • Reduce patient anxiety by providing a calm environment.
  • Demonstrate venipuncture techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Fully understand all physician orders.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
  • Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport.
  • Store specimens according to required temperature, place samples in appropriate containers, and label accurately.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in proper collection methods and specimen processing.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Reliable transportation with at least 4 years of licensed driving experience and a valid driver's license.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Willingness to travel throughout assigned geography approximately 100% of the time.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds.
