About the Role
The Phlebotomist provides expertise in blood draws and specimen preparation, ensuring high-quality care by putting patients at ease and obtaining sufficient samples with minimal discomfort.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data and decontamination, and update patient information.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Explain the venipuncture process clearly and courteously.
- Demonstrate venipuncture techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
- Understand and fulfill physician orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
- Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport.
- Store specimen samples according to required temperature, place samples in appropriate collection containers, and accurately label them.
- Follow specific protocols for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Wear appropriate attire, including all PPE.
- Attend annual department trainings.
- Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent patient interaction skills both in person and by phone.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently.
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
- Ability to lift 20 pounds.
- Frequent contact with water, biohazardous body fluids, and hazardous chemicals.
