About the Role

The Phlebotomist provides expertise in blood draws and specimen preparation, ensuring high-quality care by putting patients at ease and obtaining sufficient samples with minimal discomfort.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data and decontamination, and update patient information.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Explain the venipuncture process clearly and courteously.
  • Demonstrate venipuncture techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
  • Understand and fulfill physician orders.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
  • Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport.
  • Store specimen samples according to required temperature, place samples in appropriate collection containers, and accurately label them.
  • Follow specific protocols for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Wear appropriate attire, including all PPE.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent patient interaction skills both in person and by phone.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds.
  • Frequent contact with water, biohazardous body fluids, and hazardous chemicals.
